OrmPS Logo Story

The Ormiston Primary School Logo design is inspired by the Koru. Koru can be translated from Te Reo Māori to mean “loop” and is a spiral shape evoking a newly unfurling silver fern frond. The Koru is a taonga (treasure) and can symbolize new beginnings, growth, strength, and harmony. These are all qualities we encourage at Ormiston Primary School.

The circle aspect of The Ormiston Primary School logo represents wholeness, without beginning or end, as does the shape of the Koru. The Koru’s circular shape suggests perpetual movement, while its inward coil evokes a return to the point of origin.

Our logo is more than a symbol—it is the foundation of our school’s story. From its design, emerged principles that guide Ormiston Primary School. It reflects who we are, what we stand for, and what is most important at Ormiston Primary School.

  • Who: we believe there are four  groups that are essential to the success of our school – learners, their families, educators, and the wider community
  • Where: we welcome many different cultures and ethnicities from the Four Corners of the World brought to us by the Four Winds. The four Koru of our logo circle symbolise the four winds, Ngā Hau E Wha
  • How: we believe in educating the whole person at Ormiston Primary weaving the Māori philosophy of holistic health, Hauora, into our learning
  • Why & What: we have Four Vision Principles derived from our school vision of “Guaranteeing every learner engages in innovative, personalised world-class learning”. Learning is central to everything at Ormiston Primary. The logo is a visual cue and reminds us of these principles.

Vision Principles

The Ormiston Learner believes in, demonstrates and expresses our vision  principles:

  • I am Capable
  • I am Connected
  • I am Curious
  • I am Collaborative

Ngā Hau E Wha (The Four Winds)

Within Te Ao Māori, the Four Winds play a role in shaping the connections of people to the land, sky, sea, and the Four Corners of the World.  The philosophy acknowledges the interconnectedness of all peoples from many distinct cultures around the world and every culture, every person, and every land is seen as contributing to the whole. This concept of interconnectedness flows through the Ormiston Primary School Learning Community; learners, family, educators, and the wider community help create our vision of world-class learning, by bringing together expertise from around the world.

Hauora

Hauora is a Māori concept of holistic health and well-being, encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. It’s a unique philosophy of health deeply rooted in Māori culture and practices, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these four aspects of a person’s life.

  • Taha tinana: physical well-being: the physical body, its growth, development, and ability to move, and ways of caring for it
  • Taha hinengaro: mental and emotional well-being: coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings and responding constructively
  • Taha whānau: social well-being: family relationships, friendships, and other interpersonal relationships; feelings of belonging, compassion, and caring; and social support
  • Taha wairua: spiritual well-being: the values and beliefs that determine the way people live, the search for meaning and purpose in life, and personal identity and self-awareness. For some individuals and communities, spiritual well-being is linked to a particular religion, for others, it is not
